Educational therapy is intervention that explores, characterizes and concentrates on an individual’s pattern of learning strengths and deficits. Therapy should not be confused with tutoring. Therapy addresses the skills needed for the student to become more self-sufficient and aware of their learning style. There are several different styles of learning according to Cognitive psychologist Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence. An illustration would be giving students exercises that improve critical thinking skills, reading speed or attention span.

 

Educational therapy empowers children and adults with learning challenges to develop self-efficacy and thus a better belief in their abilities. It stimulates an understanding of their strengths develop more successful strategies. Educational therapists create and implement a treatment plan that utilizes information from a variety of sources including the client’s social, emotional and psycho educational to assist parents and teachers to better serve the student.

 

Everyone wants to be successful. Students, who put forth great effort and fail despite parent-teacher interventions or private academic tutoring, should be evaluated for underlying learning difference. Students do not outgrow learning difficulties and this could lead to social and emotional problems.
